Passing the stands of the Russian market in Phnom Penh, you will notice that we find the leather crafts! They are puppets handmade by artisans in Cambodia.
In Khmer, the puppets from this traditional Cambodian art are designated by the term Sbaek.

CAMBODIA WHAT .. SBAEK (leather puppet)

Cambodian puppets are made so traditional cowhide or buffalo. They are finely carved and sculpted to look like various characters. The themes of these puppets are often representations of gods, mythical animals, kings, princesses or characters from everyday life. The articulated figure is then coated with a veneer plant.
These objects of art handicraft of Cambodia are carved by a multitude of holes as before, the puppeteers are placed between the audience and a fire to illuminate the puppets of the shadow theater. Today's shows use a white background.

CAMBODIA WHERE? .. SIEM REAP, Sisophon, PHNOM PENH

The puppets are from the Cambodian shadow theater. It is a mode of expression of the Cambodian people who were very popular before the Khmer Rouge period. Currently, the shadow theater is only Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Sisophon through the work of rehabilitation agencies international and cultural associations.

CAMBODIA HERITAGE AND CULTURE

At the time of Angkor Wat, the royal court rugs were made of buffalo hides laid flat on the ground. One day the king commanded to change the carpets that were beginning to be old. When the servants remove skin rugs, worn carpets on the stone in creating a multitude of small holes that are very light. Then the king had an idea distinguishing them in some form. He then cut a figure of Reamker and shadow theater was born!

Theatre Cambodia:
There are three types of theater in Cambodia .

The first large theater (Lakhaon Sbaek Thom), use of large puppets that are not articulated. The puppeteers handle at arm's length figures and dances performed in public. This form of theater (Sbeik Thom) features a poem "Reamker. The Khmer Reamker is a poem inspired by the Ramayana India. We can admire the mythical stories about the Reamker friezes of Angkor Wat and Banteay. This theater was a sacred art of Cambodia exclusively to be played before the royal court.


The second type of theater (Lakhaon Sbaek Touch) using small puppets. It is accompanied by an orchestra Khmer. Themes told in these documents relate to love, everyday life of Cambodian people , the epic of warriors and other heroes. This theater was one of the people in the villages.


The third stage (Lakhaon Sbaek Por) later stages of small non-articulated puppets of color. It dates from the 19th century. The leather is cut and painted with motifs of Angkor. The puppeteers are dressed up and playing to a black screen.
